Wind, weather and traffic conditions on Storebælt, however, differ from those of other motorways. This imposes demands on us as the organisation responsible for operating and maintaining the bridge as well as on our customers.
24 hours per day, 365 days per year
Under normal conditions, the Storebælt Bridge is open for 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Since, for the most part, the wind blows from the west and the bridge lies in an east-west direction, high winds rarely present a problem.
Wind-sensitive vehicles are most vulnerable
Should you find yourself exposed to high winds on the bridge, your vehicle’s wind sensitivity is crucial. Large vehicles, of course, are more exposed to high winds than small vehicles. An empty lorry, for instance, is far more wind-sensitive than a passenger car. Providing the recommended speed limit is observed, a passenger car will almost always be able to drive across the bridge.
Passenger cars with trailers or caravans are far more sensitive to wind than normal passenger cars.
Examples of wind-sensitive vehicles
- Cars towing caravans
- Cars towing trailers
- Lorries with light loads, e.g. insulation
- Empty, light lorries
This list is not complete and we must point out that crossing the bridge is undertaken at your own risk.
When you can’t drive across the bridge
If you are prevented from driving across the bridge, e.g. because of high winds, there are waiting areas on both sides of the bridge.
- On Funen, you can pull in at the Monarch service station at exit 44
- On Zealand, you can pull in at the Q8 service station at exit 43
Information will be made available on both sides as to when you can cross the bridge again.
